Just Fabric

Is a piece of cloth root of all conflict?

Surely, we are all robed, de-robed in someones version of packaging.

From high fashion to low fashion, in my case no fashion,

Layers upon layers of fabric wrappers,

luxurious finery, patch work tatters,

highlight who and where and what and how

1 in a million or lost in a crowd.

From cottons to synthetics to silks and more,

from the cheapest of the cheap to the dearest of them all,

we are all cloaked in some form of packaging.

Would it surprise you if I said,

I’m just as indecisive as you?

That I fancifully select items of clothes,

mull over colours, textures and endless shoe rows

At once reaching for something bright, that feels light,

to walk, skip or run in, come snowfall, rainfall or glorious sun beams

I dig deep, reaching deep for delicious rich hues.

Darkness in colour doesn’t mean darkness in nature too.

From cottons to synthetics to silks and more,

from the cheapest of the cheap to the dearest of them all,

we are all cloaked in some form of packaging.

Savour the feeling of fabric between your fingers,

Acknowledge the sensation as it warms against your skin,

enjoy the ritual of combing your hair and tying up loose locks,

of placing a cap upon your head and tying a tight knot

then ending with a final layer, a self assured sweep

of cloth that encompasses all, tidy and neat.

From cottons to synthetics to silks and more,

from the cheapest of the cheap to the dearest of them all

We are all cloaked in some form of packaging.

  1. We are all just fabric whichever way we choose to glance, to feel, to be and embrace,
we are merely a grand of sand within this cosmos, our blind human race.

Your poem got me thinking about many things from a range of persepectives. Very well written! Thank you for sharing Shaila!
